Presencia turns its attention to Puerto Rico this week. Political, economic, and social issues inspire many Puerto Ricans to leave the island. We talk to Holyoke Director of Planning and Economic Development Marcos Marrero and Enlace de Familias Executive Director Betty Medina Liechtenstein about these trends and how they affect western New England, which has a significant Puerto Rican population. Nelson Luciano provides a personal story about his family’s relocation from Puerto Rico. Jose Gonzalez and his sons Ahmed and Rene, perform original compositions featuring “the cuatro”, (Puerto Rico’s national instrument). Finally, Rafael Fernandez and Holyoke’s Fernandez Restaurant offer an authentic taste of the island.
