Cultural Expression & Stereotyping

Cuando estamos fuera de nuestro entorno, llevamos imágenes y estereotipos predeterminados del sitio a donde nos dirigimos. Esos estereotipos pueden ser culturales, sociales o raciales.
Verónica García entrevistará a Elizabeth Cardona, directora ejecutiva de asuntos multiculturales y vida estudiantil internacional en la Universidad de Bay Path junto al profesor de literatura español y filmación internacional Javier Venturi de la Universidad de Elms.
En el tema de los estereotipos, nuestros invitados nos explicarán desde sus especialidades académicas la razón por la cual tendemos a encasillar ciertos comportamientos característicos que marcan las culturas desde sus raíces históricas. También hablaremos como este patrón se transmiten a través de generaciones, con expresiones exageradas y tendencias peyorativas, la cual hace que los estereotipos se conviertan en instrumentos de opresión. Nuestros invitados compartirán el por qué es importante crear conciencia social y desmentir ideas preconcebidas.

When we are outside of our normal environment, we take away images and predetermined stereotypes from the places we visit.  These stereotypes can be cultural, social, or racial. 

Veronica Garcia will interview Elizabeth Cardona, executive director of multicultural affairs and international student life at Bay Path University, as well as Spanish literature and international film professor Javier Venturi, from Elms University.  On the topic of stereotypes, our guests will explain from an academic standpoint the reason why we tend to pigeonhole certain behavioral traits that have characterized different cultures since their historic roots.  We will also talk about how this pattern is carried throughout generations, with exaggerated expressions and pejorative tendencies, turning stereotypes into an instrument of oppression.  Our guests will share with us the reason why it is so important to create social awareness and debunk these preconceived ideas.
